Depth, Duration, Volatility, and Internal Swings
Continuation and Complex Structures
Lesson / WY-05-22
Range depth is the consolidation's retracement relative to the preceding trend leg and the instrument's normal volatility. Shallow consolidation usually retraces only a small part of the prior leg, but may simply be unfinished. Deep consolidation reverses more ground, yet need not damage the trend in a high-volatility environment. Retracement as a proportion of the preceding complete advance can aid description, without universal cross-instrument thresholds.
