Lesson / WY-02-09
Continuous futures join different expiration months, with volume and OI migrating from old to new contracts during rolls. The continuous series alone may mistake migration for an abrupt change in market interest. Specify the active-contract selection rule, roll date, and whether prices are back-adjusted, and inspect individual months around the roll. Price adjustment can improve continuity but does not make two contracts’ volume automatically additive or eliminate calendar spreads.
