The Method’s Knowledge Structure
First Principles
Sam Rivera
Lesson / WY-01-01
The Wyckoff method rests on three laws, each examining a different issue. The law of supply and demand assesses which side is currently better able to move price by asking which direction advances more easily and whether price remains outside a boundary after breaking it. Once direction has supporting evidence, the law of cause and effect uses the horizontal structure and point-and-figure chart parameters to estimate a potential move. The law of effort versus result pairs trading activity with price displacement to judge whether they are proportionate. A range may have a wide point-and-figure count without having chosen a direction. An advance on expanding volume may show harmony between effort and result yet offer insufficient trading room near long-term resistance. The three laws complement one another; none substitutes for another.
