Before using volume, establish exactly what the data measure. In centrally matched markets, volume usually comes from actual trades on that venue; stock data may consolidate multiple venues. Some spot foreign-exchange or CFD charts provide only one broker’s sample, tick volume, or the number of quote updates. Futures also involve changes in the most active contract and adjustments to continuous contracts. These data can all support relative comparisons within their own series, but their market coverage and measurement units differ and cannot simply be joined into one series.
